On September 21, 2010, the NYC Citizen Corps Council (NYC CCC) and the Home-Based Care Task Force (HBCTF) hosted the Symposium on Emergency Preparedness Strategies for People with Special Needs at Brooklyn Borough Hall to help bridge the gap between consumers, direct care providers, and program administrators. The morning session, which was directed towards consumers and direct care providers, focused on personal preparedness education and identifying the barriers to planning. The afternoon session was directed toward administrative-level service providers and focused on strategies to enhance agencies' continuity of operations.
By the end of the day, it was clear the symposium had served a dual purpose: not only did participants learn useful strategies and techniques about how to prepare for emergencies, they also discovered what issues are currently being faced by emergency management personnel and people with special needs. The NYC CCC and the HBCTF will continue to meet monthly and look forward to incorporating lessons learned from the symposium into future events and meetings.
