On September 2, OEM and the NYC Citizen Corps Council kicked off National Preparedness Month in New York City by distributing information about planning and preparing for emergencies. National Preparedness Month is a nationwide campaign to promote emergency preparedness and encourage volunteerism sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
OEM and its Citizen Corps Council partners set up tables at pedestrian- heavy sites including Times Square in Manhattan, Borough Hall in Brooklyn, The Hub in the Bronx, Queens Library, and the Staten Island Ferry Terminal and distributed Ready New York pocket guides and hand sanitizer to New Yorkers.

Volunteers gave out more than 100,000 preparedness guides and 30,000 bottles of hand sanitizer throughout the five boroughs.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano joined OEM Commissioner Joseph Bruno and American Red Cross of Greater New York CEO Terry Bischoff in Times Square to launch “Ready New York City,” a new public service advertising campaign designed to encourage New Yorkers to prepare for emergencies.

Members of local CERT teams taught New Yorkers at The Hub in the Bronx about how they can participate in their communities and become better prepared for emergencies.

FDNY set up tables outside Borough Hall in Brooklyn to promote fire education and emergency preparedness.

OEM and partners from the American Red Cross encouraged New Yorkers in Times Square to sign up to get involved and volunteer in their communities.

More than 200 volunteers from OEM, NYC Citizen Corps Council, and American Red Cross of Greater New York participated at the five locations during the kick-off event.
