More than six in 10 New Yorkers say they are prepared for an emergency such as a natural disaster, fire, or power outage, according to OEM's second annual preparedness survey. The reasons they prepare vary widely, but the most common reason New Yorkers do not prepare for emergencies is that they have not considered it.

The results show that New Yorkers are most concerned about another widespread power outage and least concerned about a fire in their building. Fully 88% of respondents believe another large power outage will occur in the next 10 years.

The survey also found that almost seven in 10 New Yorkers say they are informed about what to do in the event of an emergency such as a natural disaster or power outage. Almost four in 10 New Yorkers say they have seen, read, or heard something recently about how to prepare for an emergency.
