Ditmas Park / Prospect Park South Phone
Outage
Sept. 16, 2004: Brooklyn Telephone
Outage
As a result of a
construction accident in which cables were cut near the Cortelyou Road station
on the Q line, some customers in Ditmas Park and Prospect Park South are experiencing disruptions to telephone
service.
During the outage, residents are reminded of the following
ways to reach police and fire departments in emergencies:
|
|
- Cell phones are unaffected; neighbors are asked
to help those without telephone service who need to make urgent calls.
- NYPD's 70th precinct is located at 154 Lawrence
Ave.
- FDNY's engine 281, ladder 147 is located at
1210 Courtelyou Road.
- The City's network of red emergency call boxes are working
and allow callers to reach emergency services. To find one,
look for a glowing orange indicator (shaped like a can of
tennis balls) on top of corner street lamps. This orange
light means there is a call box located on that corner.

OEM is currently working with Verizon to expedite
repairs. In the meantime, the City has taken a number of measures to ensure
public safety during the outage:
- NYPD has increased neighborhood patrols for the duration
of the outage and has located a command vehicle onRugby Road in
front of P.S. 139 to assist residents in emergencies.
- Verizon
has provided additional banks of pay telephones at the following locations:
Cortelyou Road & E. 7th St., Cortelyou Road & E. 8th St., Cortelyou Road & Ocean Pkwy., and Cortelyou
Road & Coney Island Avenue
- Verizon
has additional cellular phones available on their truck for residents who need
to call 911.
