	On November 18, 2004, Mayor Bloomberg formally designated the Mayor's Task Force on Sustainability and charged it with coordinating and facilitating the incorporation of environmentally sustainable principles into the City government's planning, operations, policymaking and regulatory functions. The goals of the Task Force are to: Identify opportunities where City agencies can make cost-effective changes to policies and procedures that conserve resources, improve air quality, increase open space, reduce solid waste, and, generally, improve the health and quality of life for New Yorkers by improving the environment in which they work and live Design and implement mechanisms by which policies and procedures can be changed to achieve these goals.

	In January 2005, the Task Force put its charge into action and convened eight Working Groups, consisting of nearly two dozen city agencies to address sustainability issues and help the Task Force establish New York City's official policy on sustainability. Task Force members actively participate in these Working Groups and provide overall guidance as necessary to achieve the goals outlined by the Mayor. The following is a list of the Working Groups' focus areas: Solid Waste Energy Water Open Space/Land Use Financial Transportation Buildings/Infrastructure Sustainable Procurement/Best Business Practices The following agencies and offices are represented on one or more Working Group: Department of Parks and Recreation Department of City Planning Department of Citywide Administrative Services Department of Transportation Department of Education Department of City Planning New York City Housing Authority Office of Management and Budget Health and Hospitals Corporation School Construction Authority Economic Development Corporation Department of Sanitation Department of Environmental Protection Department of Buildings Office of Environmental Coordination Mayor's Office of Contracts Department of Small Business Services Procurement Policy Board Department of Design and Construction Department of Finance Taxi and Limousine Commission Department of Housing Preservation and Development Mayor's Office of Operations
