Alternative Fuels

The New York City Department of Transportation’s Alternative Fuels Program is working to accomplish two goals:

o To make the area cleaner and safer for New Yorkers so that we can breathe easily and without worry.

o To promote the use of alternative fuels and alternative fuel vehicles in New York City by both the private businesses and government agencies.

The Alternative Fuels Program is working to replace New York City’s public fleets with alternative fuel vehicles in order to promote and expand usage of alternative fuels which are much less polluting to the air and more friendly to the environment.

Bike Program

NYCDOT encourages the use of the bicycles as transportation by providing bicycle facilities, parking, and promotion. The City published and distributes free bicycle maps, installs bike racks, and plans and develops bicycle lanes.

Clean Air Initiative

Since 1999, NYCDOT has participated in the national "It All Adds Up to Cleaner Air" program, a unique public education and partnership-building initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) Federal Highway Administration, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Office of Transportation and Air Quality, and DOT's Federal Transit Administration. Air quality messages have been posted on billboards and advertisements installed on 200 bus stop shelters citywide. The air quality awareness message has also been incorporated into NYCDOT programs, including the Safety Education Program curriculum. In March of 2004, NYCDOT earned the distinction of being named Community Partner Champion for March 2004.

Greenways

Parks is a lead agency in the effort to bring more and better options for bicycle commuting to New York. Approximately 150 miles of greenways have been built in the five boroughs, with plans for a total system of 350 miles. These greenways connect parks and other destinations and provide an alternative transportation option for commuting to work and personal trips. Decreasing automobile trips contributes to better air quality and to the health of more active New Yorkers. The space-efficient design of most greenways, with room for adjacent planted buffers, provides additional benefits through stormwater absorption.
