Department of Sanitation
The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) conducts the largest mandatory curbside recycling program in the United States. DSNY collects newspaper, mixed paper, metal, glass and certain plastics separately from ordinary refuse and diverts it to processing facilities for recycling.
The Department conducts a seasonal leaf and yard waste collection program for composting, with the resulting compost used for parkland restoration efforts and a portion made available for community gardeners. In addition, large quantities of other materials are recycled, including asphalt and asphalt millings from road construction, rock and soil from various city projects, automotive tires, and derelict vehicles.
Commercial establishments are required to recycle paper and metal, and food and beverage establishments must recycle beverage containers. Mixed construction and demolition debris from private and public projects typically undergoes processing and recovery at private facilities.
