What is the Family Justice Center (FJC)?
Many agencies and community-based organizations work together at the Family Justice Centers to provide essential services to domestic violence victims - in one location.

When are the Family Justice Centers open and where are they located?
The Centers are open Mondays through Fridays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.  The Bronx Center is located at 198 East 161 Street.  The Brooklyn Center is located at 350 Jay Street in downtown Brooklyn.  The Queens Center is located at 126-02 82nd Avenue off of Queens Boulevard.  All Centers are accessible by public transportation. 

Do I need to make an appointment for services at the FJC?
No, you may just walk in Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.  You only need to make an appointment if you are scheduling a follow-up visit. 

Do I need to have a Criminal Court case to go to the FJC?
No. Any Bronx, Brooklyn, or Queens victim of domestic violence can utilize services at the Centers. Clients meet with an advocate from a partner organization to select from a range of services.
Are there special safety precautions at the FJC?
Yes, each Center is located in buildings with security to ensure the safety of clients and staff. All visitors should go to the FJC security desk, and will be asked to go through metal detectors. Visitors should bring picture identification.
Can I get services if I am an immigrant and do not speak English?
Yes, you may walk in to the FJC and meet with someone who speaks your language and is sensitive to your culture. You may also communicate with staff using Language Line interpretation services over the telephone.

Will the police ask about my immigration status?
In September, 2003, Mayor Bloomberg passed a City law that states, “it shall be the policy of the Police Department not to inquire about the immigration status of crime victims, witnesses or others who call or approach the police seeking assistance.”

Is the FJC accessible for wheelchairs?
Yes, the buildings are wheelchair-accessible, and certain organizations at the FJC specialize in helping disabled domestic violence victims obtain a range of services, including specialized shelter.

Does the FJC help victims over age 60?
Yes, representatives from the Department for the Aging and the Jewish Association for Services for the Aged provide counseling, direct services, and information about community services for the elderly.

Can I make a police report at the FJC?
Yes, a police officer can help you to make a report.

Can I get criminal and civil legal information at the FJC?
Yes, you can get civil legal information regarding Family Court matters, immigration, and divorce from partner organizations at the FJC. You can speak with an Assistant District Attorney regarding any criminal matter.

What other services are available to support me?
Long-term counseling is available from licensed social workers from various community groups. Clergy from a variety of faiths provide spiritual support to clients on a voluntary basis at the FJC. Partner organizations offer immediate and long-term case management services for clients.

Can I bring my children to the FJC?
Yes, children can stay in a professionally staffed Children’s Room while a client receives services on site.

Can I come back to the FJC for follow-up services?
Yes, you may return to the FJC for follow-up services or arrange to visit a service provider at their home office.

Can I tour the FJC?
Tours can be arranged.  To tour the Bronx Center, please call (718) 508-1220.  To tour the Brooklyn Center, please call (718) 222-7460.  To tour the Queens Center, please call (718) 575-4545. 
As a service provider, can I refer a client to the FJC?
Yes, your client may walk in to the FJC Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. No appointment is necessary.
As a service provider, if I refer clients to the FJC, how can I follow up?
You should ask clients whom you refer to the FJC to give you their advocate’s contact information after the visit or you may give your business card to clients, so that FJC advocates can follow up with you. In order to respect confidentiality, the FJC administrative staff is unable to provide any information about individuals who have visited the FJC.
