Information for Drivers and Owners of Cars Taken by the New York Police Department After an Arrest

Did the Police Take Your Car?  A Guide to Your Hearing at the OATH Tribunal (in PDF):

OATH has partnered with Columbia Law School  to create a user-friendly website that explains how to proceed if your car is taken by the NYPD during an arrest; this is called a “seizure”.  The site is meant to help people who decide to represent themselves to understand the procedures for requesting the return of their car.

On the site you will get useful information to help you navigate the OATH hearing process as well as the chance to view videos from OATH Judges about:

  • the website and how to use it
  • what the NYPD must prove, and
  • the hearing process.

To learn more about how you might get your car back, please go to the Columbia Law School website.

Please note, this is not about cars towed because of a parking violation. For that problem, call 311 or visit NYC's website for Parking & Vehicles: Towed Vehicles.
