Scholarshps for Dependent Children and Spouses of Members of the Service

THE BALAMBAL PALANIYANDI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This memorial scholarship is a charitable educational donation of $50,000.00 from Dr. and Mrs. R.B. Palaniyandi to Brooklyn College.

The Balambal Palaniyandi Memorial Scholarship is for a student who has demonstrated character whose spouse and/or parent is/was a member of the firefighters, police officers or emergency services personnel.  Special preference will be given to those whose spouse and/or parent died in the line of duty.  A full or partial scholarship will be given to the deserving recipient.

ARTHUR CRAMES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND – IONA COLLEGE

Award:           The Iona College Arthur Crames Endowed Scholarship Fund provides financial aid for the children of members of the Department. The minimum scholarship award is $500 each semester or $1,000 each school year.

Eligibility:      Children of deceased or disabled uniformed members of the New York City Police Department, and children of active New York City Police Officers.  Funds are limited, and priority will be given to children of police officers who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty.  This allows for children of all active police officers to apply for any remaining funds.

Academic Requirements:

  • Candidates must meet all admission requirements of Iona College
  • High school cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher.
  • Additional consideration will be shown to candidates who have demonstrated respect for the values of public service (e.g. volunteer programs, mentoring, community service, etc.).

THE SOCIETY OF HONORARY POLICE SURGEONS OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK, INC.

The Society of Honorary Police Surgeons of the City of New York, Inc. is composed of N.Y.P.D. Honorary Police Surgeons who have donated $6,000.00 for a scholarship fund in honor of former New York City Police Department Surgeons Clarence G. Robinson and Robert E. Thomas, MD.

Award:            Police Surgeon Scholarship fund provides two awards of $3,000.00 each. 

Eligibility:       These awards are for the dependent children of active uniformed members of the service, who have been admitted or are attending graduate schools in various medical and dental related fields.  Final recipients will be chosen on the basis of financial need, academic achievement, and an interview.  Awards will be presented annually at the Society of Honorary Police Surgeons Dinner Dance.

 VISITING NURSE SERVICE OF NEW YORK SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Visiting Nurse Service of New York Scholarship Fund is for the education of children of New York City Uniformed personnel who have died in “non-line of duty” incidents. Scholarship awards will be based on academic excellence, financial need, and career interests. The amount of funds available for the scholarship vary from year to year as well as the number of scholarships awarded.  Priority will be given to students in the health sciences, however, all who meet the eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply.

EUGEN GRABSCHEID

This scholarship awards the children of active, retired or deceased, uniformed and civilian Members of the Service who are pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in the medical field, including nurse practitioner.  The Police Foundation has made numerous awards available. Department Bulletins announcing this scholarship is published every April. The contact person is Karla Manning at the New York City Police Foundation 212.751.8170.

THE HUNDRED YEAR ASSOCIATION COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Hundred Year Association of New York funds college scholarships for children of career civil service employees. The scholarships range from $1,000 to $6,000. The awards are issued to children of permanent city employees with two (2) years of continuous full time service in a position for which the salary in whole or in part is paid by the City of New York. Selections are based on scholastic achievement, leadership, on participation in school and community service activities, and on scores on SAT or ACT exams.  These awards may be used to pursue any field of study.  For further information call Civilianization/Staff Development at 646.610.6607.  Refer to Department Bulletin # 13, dated 04/28/03.

MANFRED PAKAS

This scholarship is available to students 14 through 24 years of age who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in any field of study. They must be children of police officers who died in the line of duty.  The requirements are that these children are enrolled in, or accepted by an accredited College or University. The award is funded by the New York City Police Foundation and varies in the amount awarded each year.  The Department Bulletin announcement of this scholarship is published every April. POLICE RESERVE ASSOCIATION CITY OF NEW YORK ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP EXAMINATION AND AWARDS

The Police Reserve Association holds its Annual College Scholarship Examination at the Police Academy.  Eight awards are issued, one for $2,500, two for $1,500, and five for $1,000.  These awards will be issued to sons and daughters of active or retired uniformed Members of the New York City Police Department.  The exam is open to college bound high school seniors who will attend a two or four-year college and be matriculated from September 1st to August 31st of the current year.  Contact person is Mitchell F.
