 Drivers Education & Training Section
The mission of the Driver Education and Training Unit is to promote safe vehicle operation by all members of the service. The Police Academy Driver Education & Training Unit provides basic RMP EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operators Course) instruction to recruit officers as well as advanced "In-Service" training with emergency vehicles. Officers attend driver training courses for "Department-Qualification" in various types of vehicles, i.e. Police Vans, Patrol Wagons, Bicycles, Scooters, Buses, Tow Trucks, etc. Courses include "Hands-On" vehicle instruction in addition to classroom lectures and discussion on "Defensive Driving Techniques & Skills". Training includes defensive driving tactics (lighting, weather conditions, speed, hydroplaning, road surfaces, blind spots, and vehicle dynamics), seatbelts, airbags, and safe driving distance. Accident statistics, alert driving, vehicle maintenance and review of participants’ accidents. Field exercise includes the Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC), and off site driving. The EVOC portion of the Driver Training Program is a series of individual stations connected in a continuous oval pattern on the driving field. Each station is designed to replicate the required driver actions and vehicle movements needed for safe operation and collision avoidance. Offsite (street/highway) exercises include actual street and highway driving skills, where driving instructors assess the students’ basic driving skills (turns, entering intersections, parking, space cushion, etc.) and their proactive defensive driving skills.
