Driver Training

     The mission of the Driver Education and Training Unit is to instill a safe driving attitude. Our goal is to improve public perception of the Police Department through the development of the skills necessary to operate all Department vehicles safely.  Twenty-five (25) courses are offered covering eighteen (18) different vehicle types.  The following objectives are at the core of each vehicle qualification course:

  • Accident prevention.
  • Preparing students for Emergency Vehicle Operation
  • Enhancement of Defensive Driving.
  • Train, Test, and Qualify students at an Emergency Response Level.
  • Driving with Courtesy, Professionalism and Respect (C.P.R.).
  • Educate students on proper vehicle inspections and vehicle maintenance.
  • Displaying high regard for public safety and its impact on community relations.

Some of the vehicles qualification courses offered are as follows:

  • Patrol Car.
  • Tow truck.
  • Bus.
  • Two and Three wheel scooters.
  • Tractor Trailer
  • Bicycle.

The Driver Education and Training Unit provide training to both civilian and uniformed members of the Department.  Recruits attend Drivers Training during their Police Academy instruction.  The Driver Education and Training Unit continue to support members of the Department throughout their career as other vehicle qualification and education may be requested or required.
