The Chemical Ordinance, Biological and Radiological Awarencess(COBRA) Training Unit

Through the use of realistic, goal-oriented training, the Chemical Ordinance, Biological and Radiological Awarencess Training Unit (COBRA) keeps officers in the field up to date with emergency issues and the challenges of responding to them.  Current courses include the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear/HazardoursMaterial (CBRN/HazMat) Operations Level Training Program also known as the Law Enforcement Protective Measures and Law Enforcement Responder Actions (LEPM/LERA), and the CBRN/HazMat Operations Level Training Refresher.

CBRN/HazMat Operations Level Training provides uniformed members of the service in the rank of Lieutenant, Sergeant and Police Officer with an operational level of awareness on how to properly respond to a possible incident involving chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear materials. The unit is tasked with presenting  the initial 2 day CBRN/HazMat Operations Level Training certification course as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) mandated annual refresher course. Since its inception in January 2004, the unit has trained over 22,000 active uniformed members of the service in the two day CBRN/HazMat Operations Level Training certification course.  Curriculum for CBRN/HazMat Operations Level training is produced by the Center for Domestic Preparedness, United States Department of Homeland Security. The initial CBRN/HazMat Operations Level Training and CBRN/HazMat Operations Level Training Refresher, have been reviewed by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Training and have been approved for use by Training Bureau personnel.
