NEW YORK CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES STREET CLOSURES AND EXPECTED TRAFFIC DELAYS FOR OCTOBER 31st & NOVEMBER 1ST

The New York City Police Department today announced street closures and anticipated traffic delays for the weekend of October 31st and November 1st, 2009.  Drivers should expect delays in the following areas:

Special Advisory

Verrazano-Narrows Bridge Closed for ING NYC Marathon on

Sun., 11/1/09; Partial closures begin Sat. night, 10/31/09

 

Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes due to the following closures of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in order to accommodate the running of the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 1, 2009.

 

UPPER LEVEL:

Both directions: On Saturday, October 31st, the entire upper level of the bridge (Staten Island- and Brooklyn-bound) will close at 11 PM, to allow for roadway preparation in advance of the race. In addition, all vehicles containing hazardous materials (HAZMAT) will not be permitted to cross the bridge in either direction beginning at this time on Saturday.

Upper level closures will remain in effect until approximately 3 PM on Sunday, November 1st, when both directions are expected to reopen to traffic.

 

LOWER LEVEL:

Staten Island-bound: On Sunday, November 1st the Bay Street and Lily Pond Avenue exits in Staten Island will close at 5 AM.

Also on Sunday morning, the entire lower level westbound to Staten Island will close at 7 AM. The closure will remain in effect until approximately 3 PM when the Staten Island-bound lower level is expected to re-open to traffic.

 

Brooklyn-bound: On Sunday, November 1st the entire lower level eastbound to Brooklyn will close at 7 AM. The closure will remain in effect until approximately 3 PM, when the Brooklyn-bound lower level is expected to re-open to traffic.

Formation: 6th Avenue between spring & Canal Streets; Inner roadway west side of 6th Avenue between Spring & Broome Streets; Dominick Street between Varick Street & 6th Avenue; Sullivan Street between Broome & Spring Streets; Broome Street between Thompson & Varick Streets; Spring Street between Sullivan & Varick Streets

Route: 6th Avenue from Spring Street to 23rd Street

Dispersal: 21st & 22nd Streets between 5th & 7th Avenues

Manhattan: Cross to Park Row/Centre Street; cross Street to City Hall & walk along Park Row; left on Spruce; right on Gold; left on Fulton St back to Finish Line @ South Street Seaport.

Parking is prohibited on both sides of 1st Avenue from 59th Street north to the Willis Avenue Bridge and on 5th Avenue from 138th Street to 89th Street and on both sides of 59th Street from 1st Avenue to 2nd Avenue. In addition, there is no parking on Central Park West from 59th Street to 79th Street.

 

Bridges will be closed at the following times:

Lower level (west to Staten Island)     7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Lower level (Brooklyn-bound only)      7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

Pulaski Bridge (both ways)        8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

Queensboro Bridge

Upper level (both ways)                  Open all day to cars and buses, but closed to trucks.
Lower level (Manhattan-bound)        7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Lower level (Queens-bound)            7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

Willis Avenue Bridge – (both ways)       5 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Madison Avenue Bridge – (both ways)  8:30a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Following is the turn-by-turn course description of the ING New York City Marathon. This document will guide you through the entire course, starting with the three (3) different start lines on the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and finishing in Central Park.

Route:

(1) BLUE COURSE

o START on Verrazano Narrows Bridge, Brooklyn-bound upper level

o Exit Right for “92nd Street” onto Dahlgren Place

o Dahlgren Place N-bound (VZ Bridge to 92nd St)

o Left onto 92nd St. (Dahlgren Place to 4th Ave)

o Right onto 4th Ave. N-bound in N-bound traffic lanes (92nd St to Flatbush Ave)

o Bear Left onto Flatbush Ave. N-bound in N-bound traffic lanes (NOTE: merge into the

Orange Course at this point) (4th Ave to Lafayette Ave)

o Right onto Lafayette Ave. (Flatbush Ave to Bedford Ave)

(2) GREEN COURSE

o START on Verrazano Narrows Bridge, Staten Island-bound lower level

o Continue onto S-bound traffic lanes of Brooklyn-Queens Expressway

o Bear Left to proceed up S-bound 79th Street BQE entrance ramp

o Continue across 79th Street, proceeding N-bound on 7th Ave. (BQE to Bay Ridge Pkwy)

o Left onto Bay Ridge Parkway (7th Ave to 4th Ave)

o Right onto 4th Ave N-bound in N-bound traffic lanes (NOTE: Merge into Blue Course at this point)

(3) ORANGE COURSE

o START on Verrazano Narrows Bridge, Staten Island-bound upper level

o Exit Left for 92nd Street onto Gatling Place (VZ Bridge to 92nd St)

o Left onto 92nd Street, running W-bound in E-bound traffic lane (Gatling Pl to Fort

Hamilton Pkwy)

o Left onto Fort Hamilton Parkway (92nd St to 94th St)

o Right onto 94th Street (Ft. Hamilton Pkwy to 4th Ave)

o Right onto 4th Ave. N-bound, bearing to Left into S-bound traffic lanes (94th St to Flatbush Ave)

o Bear Left onto Flatbush Ave. N-bound in S-bound traffic lanes (NOTE: Merge into

Blue/Green Course at this point) (4th Ave to Lafayette Ave)

 

FROM 8 MILE MARK TO FINISH, ALL COURSES ARE NOW THE SAME:

o Proceed E-bound on Lafayette Ave.

o Left onto Bedford Ave. (Lafayette Ave to Nassau Ave)

o Bear Right onto Nassau Ave. (Lorimer/Bedford to Manhattan Ave)

o Left onto Manhattan Ave. (Nassau Ave to Greenpoint Ave)

o Right onto Greenpoint Ave. (Manhattan Ave to McGuiness Blvd)

o Left onto S-bound traffic lanes of McGuinness Blvd. (Greenpoint Ave to 48th Ave)

o Continue across Pulaski Bridge in S-bound traffic lanes

o Left onto 48th Ave. (McGuiness Blvd to Vernon Blvd)

o Right onto N-bound traffic lanes of Vernon Blvd. (48th Ave to

10th St)

o Bear Right onto 10th St., (Vernon Blvd to 44th Dr)

o Turn Right onto 44th Dr (10th St to Hunter St)

o Continue in W-bound traffic lanes of 44th Drive - Bear Left onto Hunter Street (44th Dr to Crescent St)

o Immediate Left again onto Crescent Street (Hunter St to Queens Plaza)

o Continue across Queens Bridge Plaza South, then Immediate Left onto lower roadway of Queensboro Bridge, running in E-bound traffic lanes across bridge

o Bear left to run down E 59th St. vehicle entrance ramp, Continue onto E 59th St. E-bound (59th St Bridge to 1st Ave)

o Turn Left onto First Ave. (59th St to Willis Ave Bridge)

o Continue onto Willis Ave. Bridge (1st Ave to Willis Ave)

o Turn Left onto E 135th Street (Willis Ave to Alexander Ave)

o Turn Right onto Alexander Ave. (135th St to 138th St)

o Turn Left onto 138th Street (Alexander Ave to Morris Ave)

o Turn Right onto Morris Ave (138thSt to 140th St)

o Turn Left onto 140th Street (Morris Ave to Rider Ave)

o Turn Right onto E 138th Street, Continue in W-bound traffic lanes of 138th St. (Alexander Ave to Madison Ave Bridge)

o Continue onto Madison Ave. bridge in W-bound traffic lanes, At fork on W side of Madison Ave. Bridge, bear Right to continue on 138th St. W-bound (138th St to 138th St)

o Turn Left onto Fifth Ave. (138th St to 124th St)

o Turn Right onto W 124th St. (5th Ave to Mt Morris Park W)

o Turn Left onto Mt. Morris Park W (124th St to 120th St)

o Turn Left onto W 120th St. (Mt Morris Park W to 5th Ave)

o Turn Right onto Fifth Ave. (120th St to 90th St)

o Turn Right to enter Central Park at 90th Street (5th Ave to East Drive in Central Park)

o Make Immediate Left, proceed S-bound on East Drive in Central Park

o Continue S-bound on East Drive in Central Park

o At 25 Mile mark, bear Left to continue S-bound on East Drive in N-bound only traffic lanes

o At 60th Street continue S-bound alongside W side of Grand Army Plaza

o Turn Right onto Central Park South (5th Ave to 8th Ave/CPW)

o Proceed W-bound in W-bound traffic lanes of Central Park South

o Turn Right onto Columbus Circle Prior to reaching Central Park West, turn Right to enter Merchants’ Gate of Central Park on asphalt pedestrian pathway, Turn Left onto West Drive in Central Park (59th St/CPS to West Drive in Central Park)

o Proceed N-bound on West Drive  FINISH at Tavern on the Green
