An investigation by the New York City Police Department's Applicant
Processing Division, Intelligence Division, and Internal Affairs Bureau led to
the arrest today of a Traffic Enforcement Agent on charges that
he tried to
disguise his identity to obtain citizenship in the United States.
Mustofa Kamal was hired as a Traffic Enforcement Agent in February of 2001
using a valid INS Work Authorization card, valid Social Security card and other
documentation in his real name.
Last year, when he attempted to become a New York City Police Officer, Police
Department investigators discovered that Mustofa Kamal had used the name
"Shaheen Sardar" in seeking asylum in the United States. Similar information
developed by the Department's Internal Affairs Bureau led to Kamal's suspension
and arrest with the matter referred to the United States Attorney for federal
prosecution.
Kamal was arrested this morning on federal charges of making false statements
to become a United States citizen.
