Detective Rodney J. Andrews and Detective James V. Nemorin were shot and
killed on Monday, March 10, 2003, during an undercover operation while
attempting to purchase illegal firearms on Staten Island.
Detective
Andrews was appointed to the Police Department on July 18, 1996. He served in
the 23rd Precinct, the Manhattan North Task Force, Brooklyn North Narcotics, and
the Firearms Investigation Unit. While assigned to the Manhattan North Task
Force, he was honored with a Meritorious Police Duty award for his work in
initiating and conducting a fencing operation that led to 12 arrests. Detective
Andrews was 34 years old. He is survived by his wife, Maryann; his children,
Christian, 12, and Justin, 11; his mother, Patricia Marion; and his sister,
Neulinda Bryant.
The family has requested that the viewing and
funeral services remain private. Representatives of the Office of the DCPI will
be present at the service to assist members of the media. A flatbed truck will
be set up across the street from the church as a camera location. A press area
will also be reserved directly beside the front entrance to the
church.
