The Criminal Section of the NYPD Legal Bureau advises members of the Department on criminal law matters by providing legal opinions regarding criteria to establish probable cause, interpretation of statutes and Constitutional law, and issues related to arrest and prosecution of offenses.
Attorneys act as liaisons to various state and federal prosecutorial and law enforcement agencies on matters of mutual concern. The staff reviews all Department Orders and Patrol Guide revisions on policy and operational matters prior to publication.
Members of the Criminal Section are also responsible for conducting training of other Department units on criminal and constitutional law topics.
