Terrorism Awareness for Citizens

In response to the events of September 11th, 2001 Community Affairs, in collaboration with the Department’s Counter-Terrorism Bureau, created a counter-terrorism awareness brochure specially tailored for community members. This brochure offers advice on improving observation skills and helping the Police Department in its effort to prevent acts of terrorism. Brochures are available for civic, religious, and community-based organizations.

Rights and Responsibilities when Interacting with the Police

The Police Department is serious about its commitment to ensure courteous and professional service to all community members. To this end our brochure, entitled Rights and Responsibilities when Interacting with the Police, contains helpful information concerning the types of contacts between the police and the public, what to expect if stopped by the police and important telephone numbers to report a complaint or to compliment your police interaction. This brochure is available to community groups, students, and other interested individuals.

Police Commissioner's Statement Regarding Racial Profiling

On March 23rd, 2002 Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly promulgated Operations Order number 11, the official NYPD policy prohibiting the use of racial profiling in all police initiated actions.
