To protect residents and Sanitation workers, the following materials should be placed out for collection carefully.

Trash

• bulky wood, plastic, furniture, and other non-metal items 
• broken glass or fragile items
• cooking oil
• large glass items
• mattresses and box springs  
• small amounts of household hazardous waste
• liquids
• sharp objects (other than medical sharps)
• six pack rings
• syringes and lancets

Recycling

• bulky metal items 
• appliances with freon  (such as refrigerators, air conditioners and other similar items) 

Organic Waste

• christmas trees (January) 

In addition to these items, various materials are banned from disposal for NYC residents.
