It is illegal for NYC residents to place the following items in the trash. Follow these general handling tips before buying, using, and discarding any harmful household product.

• acid (hydrofluoric/sulfuric/muriatic, etc.)
• asbestos
• batteries - auto
• batteries - rechargeable
• commercial waste (unless enrolled in professional fee program )
• designated recyclables
• electronic equipment (after January 1, 2015)
• gasoline 
• highly corrosive or flammable liquids 
• liquids (unless dried out)
• mercury containing devices (other than fluorescent bulbs)
• motor oil
• propane tanks and other gas cylinders
• tires
• wood debris (certain areas - not including Christmas trees)
• yard waste (managed by a professional landscaper)

Items not on this list may not be banned from disposal, but may require special packaging and handling before being thrown away.
