If you are a New York State resident, small business, or non-profit organization of a certain size or type, manufacturers must accept your electronics for recycling free of charge. For information about these programs, as well as asset recovery programs for large businesses and organizations, visit the electronics take-back page.

If selecting your own electronics recycler or trade-in service, it is important to find out how they process and recycle the materials they collect to verify they act in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. Be sure to contact the recycling company or facility for details about their process and their end markets.

NYC Mayoral Agencies must utilize the Citywide Agency Safe Handling Contract to dispose of these items.

Accepts donations of used computers from companies to improve the home learning environment of school children from low income families.

Accepts used computers that are then recycled or refurbished and placed with educational and nonprofit organizations.

Helps to bridge the global digital divide for youth all over the world by expanding local capacity for the educational use and responsible disposal of computers. Arranges pick up for large donations; accepts small donations through the mail.

Sony leaving NYCWasteLess R2 Certifiede-stewards certified partners with local retailers to accept small and medium size electronics of any brand. Use their store locator to find a place near you.

Target leaving NYCWasteLess R2 Certifiede-stewards certified
The NextWorth trade-in program allows you to trade-in your new or used iPod, iPhone, video game, GPS system, camera, and DVDs and Blu-ray discs for a Target GiftCard. You can use the calculator to get an estimate of the value of your item and ship your item by printing off the pre-paid shipping label. In 10-14 days you'll receive a Target GiftCard for the approved value.

Computer and Electronics Recyclers

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation maintains a list of electronic waste recycling facilities leaving NYCWasteLess in New York State registered under the NY State Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act.

When choosing an electronics recycler, it is important to choose a reputable recycler. There are a variety of certification programs available to help you do that.

Recycling Certifications

When searching for electronics recyclers, it has been historically difficult to ensure that the materials being recycled are being handled in a reputable and responsible manner. There are various certification programs available to help in the choice of a recycler. 

e-stewardsleaving NYCWasteLess  e-stewards certified a project of the Basel Action Network leaving NYCWasteLess was created to help ensure that toxic materials are handled responsibly. This includes no disposal in landfills or incinerators, no prison labor, and no export to poor communities. The certifications is accredited by the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board, and recognized by the US EPA.

R2/RIOS: leaving NYCWasteLess R2 Certifieda program of the  Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries leaving NYCWasteLess was created in coopoerative with a range of electronics recycling stakeholders to combine quality, environmental, health and safety requirements in a single mqanagement system. The certifications is accredited by the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board, and recognized by the US EPA.
