FALL 2008 ELECTRONICS RECYCLING & CLOTHING DONATION EVENTS   

 
 

Over four weekends in September 2008, the Department of Sanitation's Bureau of Waste  Prevention, Reuse and Recycling (DSNY-BWPRR) held five electronics recycling and clothing donation events throughout New York City. At these events New York City residents could recycle unwanted electronics and donate clothing and linens to Goodwill Industries. Cell phones collected during these events will benefit survivors of domestic voilence through a program of the Mayor's Office to Combat Domestic Violence.  

Fall 2008 Event Stats:

  • 206 tons of electronics and 1,009 pounds of cell phones were collected for recycling
  • Goodwill Industries received 111 tons of donated clothing and linens

2008 SPRING CLEANING EVENTS

Over seven weekend days from March through May 2008, the Department of Sanitation's Bureau of Waste Prevention, Reuse and Recycling (DSNY-BWPRR) held its third annual "Spring Cleaning" Events.

At the DSNY compost sites in the Bronx and Staten Island (one weekend in April at each location), NYC residents could get free compost (as well as free wood chips in Staten Island); buy discounted compost bins; recycle unwanted electronics; and donate clothing and linens to Goodwill Industries.

DSNY-BWPRR also sponsored electronics recycling and clothing donation events over three separate weekend days (one in March and two in May) at Union Square Park in Manhattan, St. John’s University in Queens, and Prospect Park in Brooklyn.

To further promote the recycle more, waste less message, NYC's recycling characters made appearances at the Bronx, Staten Island, and Brooklyn events.  Participants at these events could take home recycling info along with free Polaroids of themselves next to NYC's recycling mascots.

2008 Spring Cleaning Event Stats:

  • 207 tons of electronics and 1,246 pounds of cell phones were collected for recycling
  • Goodwill Industries received 92 tons of donated clothing and linens
  • Approximately 1,168 cubic yards of compost and 72 cubic yards of wood chips was given out

DSNY-BWPRR organized and funded these events with assistance from the following organizations:

  • The NYC Compost Project, a DSNY-funded program that provides compost education in all five boroughs, helped run the compost givebacks.
  • The Lower East Side Ecology Center helped DSNY organize the electronics recycling portion of the 2006 "Spring Cleaning" events and Con Edison supplied partial funding.
  • Goodwill Industries partnered with DSNY to collect clothing and linens that New Yorkers donated during the events.

2007 SPRING CLEANING EVENTS

Over four weekends in April and May 2007, the Department of Sanitation's Bureau of Waste Prevention, Reuse and Recycling (DSNY-BWPRR) held its second annual "Spring Cleaning" Events at the DSNY compost sites. At these events New York City residents could get free compost; buy discounted compost bins; recycle unwanted electronics; and donate clothing and linens to Goodwill Industries.

For Manhattan residents, DSNY-BWPRR sponsored an electronics recycling and clothing donation event in April in Union Square park.

2007 Spring Cleaning Event Stats:

  • 115 tons of electronics and 749 pounds of cell phones were collected for recycling
  • Goodwill Industries received 44 tons of donated clothing and linens
  • Approximately 6,200 cubic yards of compost was given out

DSNY-BWPRR organized and funded these events with assistance from the following organizations:

  • The NYC Compost Project, a DSNY-funded program that provides compost education in all five boroughs, helped run the compost givebacks.

FALL 2006 ELECTRONICS RECYCLING & CLOTHING DONATION EVENTS

The Department of Sanitation's Bureau of Waste Prevention, Reuse and Recycling held 5 electronics recycling and clothing donation events (one in each borough) during the fall of 2006. At these events New York City residents could recycle unwanted electronics and donate clothing and linens to Goodwill Industries and Salvation Army.

Fall 2006 Event Stats:

191 tons of electronics and 1,245 pounds of cell phones were collected for recycling
104 tons of clothing and linens were donated

2006 "SPRING CLEANING" EVENTS

Throughout April and May 2006, the New York City Department of Sanitation sponsored a series of “Spring Cleaning” events where New York City residents could get free compost; recycle unwanted electronics; and donate clothing and linens to local charitable organizations. Despite unrelenting rain, around 10,000 people attended the events.

The events ran over four weekends at the Department's compost facilities. DSNY sponsored an additional electronics recycling event in Manhattan's Union Square park.

DSNY distributed 33,500 30-pound bags of compost (made from NYC leaves) to attendees of the spring 2006 compost givebacks. Residents also used their own containers to collect unlimited amounts of the top-quality compost for their gardens and backyards. A total of 995 discounted compost bins were also sold so that New Yorkers could make compost at home.

The NYC Compost Project, a DSNY-funded program that provides compost education in all five boroughs, helped run the compost givebacks. 

The Lower East Side Ecology Center helped DSNY organize the electronics recycling portion of the 2006 "Spring Cleaning" events and Con Edison supplied partial funding. A total of 118 tons (236,656 pounds) of electronic equipment and 862 pounds (.43 tons) of cell phones were collected for recycling during the events.

Goodwill Industries and the Salvation Army partnered with DSNY to collect the 31.05 tons (62,100 pounds) of clothing and linens that New Yorkers donated during the events.

The New York City Department of Sanitation sponsored five electronics recycling events in October 2005, one in each borough.

Our site partners included the following organizations: Council on the Environment of NYC's Greenmarket Program; General Growth Properties, Inc.; NYC Department of Parks & Recreation; Prestige Properties and Development Company.

Approximately 4,300 New Yorkers participated in the October 2005 electronics recycling events, dropping off nearly 196 tons (391,885 pounds) of electronic equipment and 1,432 pounds of cell phones.

FALL 2004 ELECTRONICS RECYCLING EVENTS

The New York City Department of Sanitation sponsored eight electronics recycling events from September to December 2004, in all five boroughs. The events were planned, promoted, and run in partnership with the Lower East Side Ecology Center and a host of local community organizations. Partial support for these events was provided by Dell Inc., Lexmark, and the National Recycling Coalition. 

New York City residents brought approximately 50 tons (100,000 pounds) of obsolete computer equipment and 300 pounds of cell phones to the eight recycling events.
