Get Free Compost and Discounted Compost Bins

compost giveback illustrationNYC residents (sorry, no businesses) can receive unlimited amounts of free, high-quality compost (a natural soil enhancer). The compost is made from leaves that DSNY collects from City residents each fall.

Bring a shovel and sturdy containers to take away compost. If you want your pickup truck filled, bring a tarp to cover the compost for transport. Only vehicles registered to NYC addresses can pick up compost. No commercial vehicles allowed.

Compost is a crumbly, earthy material that looks and feels like potting soil. Adding compost to backyards, gardens, and parks improves soil quality, increases plant growth, and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers and watering. For info on the uses of compost, check out “using your compost” on the New York City Compost Project website.

No Compost Givebacks at Spring Creek This Year

Since fall 2005, the NYC Department of Sanitation’s Bureau of Waste Prevention, Reuse & Recycling has given away unlimited amounts of top-quality compost from the following DSNY-BWPRR Compost Sites: Fresh Kills on Staten Island, Soundview in the Bronx, and Spring Creek near the Brooklyn/Queens border.

There is no more compost at the Spring Creek Compost Site. This is because DSNY has not received an operating permit to accept and compost more leaves at this site. The compost given away at Spring Creek came from leaves DSNY collected in fall 2001 from local area residents. Since then, DSNY has been waiting for a permit to compost additional leaves at the site. Without such a permit DSNY cannot create and distribute more compost from this location.

DSNY currently has only two permitted compost sites (Fresh Kills and Soundview) to service the entire city. To keep the leaf composting and giveback programs operational, DSNY needs additional sites.

To locate additional sites citywide, NYC’s new Solid Waste Management Plan calls for a Compost Siting Task Force to be formed by fall 2007 with representatives appointed by the Mayor, the five Borough Presidents, and City Council.
