Recycle Your Electronics

electronics iconsDrop off your unwanted electronics for recycling. Only the following items will be accepted:

  • computers & laptops
  • monitors & printers
  • scanners, keyboards & mice
  • TVs
  • cell phones

We won't accept other kinds of electronics. NYC residents (no businesses allowed*) may drop off material (limit five pieces per person).

All dropped off items will be recycled through contracted vendors and all data on hard drives will be destroyed; no scavenging will be permitted and no tax-deduction receipts will be given out. The first 100 people to drop off electronics at each event will receive a $5 Best Buy Gift Card.

While safe to use, electronics contain hazardous materials, such as lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium. Recycling your unwanted electronic equipment keeps these hazardous materials out of the waste stream and the environment.

See info on when and where.

*Businesses and institutions (if not donating or selling unwanted equipment) are required by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to dispose of computer equipment through a recycling vendor.

MANHATTAN*
Electronics Recycling & Clothing Donation Event
Sunday, September 24, 2006
8am - 2pm
Union Square North Plaza (southeast corner of 17th St. and Broadway).

*We recognize that September 24 is the second day of Rosh Hashanah. We normally make every attempt to schedule our events to avoid conflicts with major religious holidays. This fall however, there was a very small window of time for DSNY to schedule these events since we wanted to hold them after Labor Day and before our October compost giveback events. We were also limited by the availability of Union Square, which because of the Greenmarket can only be booked on Sundays and is frequently requested by other organizations. If you cannot participate in the event this fall, we recommend that you attend an event in another borough, or donate your electronics or clothing directly to a local nonprofit organization. Suggested alternatives to disposal can be found below.
