Summary: The NY State Public Health Law was amended, as part of Chapter 438 of the Laws of 1993
to require hospitals and nursing homes to accept sharps, including syringes and lancets from residents provided the materials are brought in a puncture proof container. The regulations define regulated medical waste and describe proper containment, storage, transfer, and disposal of sharps.
