Summary: The NY State Dept of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) has been authorized by the USEPA to regulate industrial hazardous waste management in the state. Hazardous waste is regulated through the permitting and inspection of hazardous waste storage, treatment, and disposal facilities, and transporters of hazardous waste. The state takes a cradle to grave approach to tracking hazardous waste requiring a manifest system in which each player from the generator to the transporter to all facilities must report their handling of the waste. In addition, NYSDEC also implements hazardous waste reduction and financial assistance programs.
Household hazardous wastes
, materials found in residential wastes that would be regulated as hazardous wastes if they were generated by industry, are exempt from state and federal hazardous waste regulations, but should be handled and disposed of with special care.
