Summary: NYC has passed a series of laws governing the purchase and use of cleaner vehicles including best available technologies for reducing emissions of pollutants, ultra low sulfur diesel fuel, and alternative fuels. The laws cover various categories of vehicles owned, used or regulated by the City. The NYC Dept of Environmental Protection administers the rules for these laws including maintaining a list of best available technology (BAT), best available retrofit technology (BART), and sulfur content allowed in ultra low sulfur diesel fuel. The NYC Dept of Transportation Alternative Fuels Program further supports this legislation.
Local Law 38 of 2005 requires the purchase of cleaner vehicles for City's bus and sanitation vehicle fleet.
