Summary: NYC's asbestos abatment law, originally established by Local Law 76 of 1985, mandates removal of asbestos from buildings facing renovation or demolition, and that workers handling asbestos receive appropriate training. The Rules of the NYC Asbestos Control Program are under the authority of the NYC Dept of Environmental Protection
in consultation with the NYC Dept of Buildings
and the NYC Fire Dept

Amendments: Local Law 37 of 2009
adds asbestos abatement project permitting requirements and specifications for temporary structures for abatement activities. Local Law 38 of 2009
requires updates to the rules regarding egress at abatement sites.
