Summary: This law, known as the Federal "Hazmat" law, is the general statute regulating hazardous materials transportation in the United States. The US Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA)
maintains a list of hazardous materials that pose environmental, property and human health risks when being transported. PHMSA also administers and regularly updates the federal hazardous materials regulations (HMR) that detail the safe handling and transportation requirements for covered hazardous materials in intrastate, interstate and foreign commerce. The law and regulations include detailed packaging, labeling and reporting requirements.
