NYC Teacher Wormshop illustration: worm bin

Worm composting (vermicomposting) for the classroom is a fun, hands-on way to teach students about decomposition, the food chain, organic recycling, and other natural systems. In this workshop, teachers learn how to set up a worm bin, feed worms with food scraps, maintain a healthy worm bin ecosystem, and harvest finished compost. The workshop introduces teachers to activities, cross-curriculum ideas, and ways to incorporate worm composting into science, math, and language arts for all age levels.

Participants receive materials on composting and recycling, and are provided with information about purchasing an actual worm bin. Some NYC Compost Project sites provide a coupon for a worm bin and worms (redeemable at a later date) at the wormshop and some sell worm bins at the wormshop. Check with the NYC Compost Project site in your borough for more information about
available wormshop resources.

Check out the NYC WasteLess calendar (select the "Organic Waste" category under "Browse Events") for dates and times of any upcoming workshops.

There is a $25 workshop fee for each classroom presentation, which covers texts, interactive projects, and a LIVE worm bin to show students the science of composting in action.
