Home Gardening Center Compost Demonstration Site
For a self-guided, visual introduction to the different stages of composting and to the types of bins suitable for home, school and community gardeners, visit the Compost Demonstration Site at The New York Botanical Garden's Home Gardening Center. Master Composters frequently conduct hands-on compost question-and-answer sessions at the site, offering visitors the practical tips, advice, and encouragement they need to take composting to the next level. Search under "organic waste" on the nycwasteless calendar for up and coming workshops and trainings at the Home Gardening Center.
Compost Bins
The NYC Compost Project in the Bronx offers compost bins at the reduced price of $65 to NYC residents. Those who attend a "Worm Bins Made Easy" workshop receive a coupon to purchase a Worm Condo, including 1 lb of worms, at cost for $55 from the NYC Compost Project in Manhattan. Also contact us for information on how to choose, customize, and construct your own compost bin out of new or recyled materials.
Compost Workshops
The NYC Compost Project in the Bronx offers a variety of workshops on how to start, manage, or build an indoor or outdoor compost system that recycles leaves, garden trimmings or food scraps into compost. Contact us for a list of workshops available to community garden, non-profit, or school groups or search under "organic waste" on the nycwasteless calendar to view our current schedule.
Master Composter Certificate Course
This comprehensive “train-the-trainer” course is designed to promote the practice of composting in homes, schools, and community gardens in the Bronx. The program is conducted each spring and consists of six Tuesday evening classes, two Saturday field trips, and 30 hours of Bronx-based volunteer outreach service in compost education and promotion. The course materials fee is $40; limited scholarships are available. Visit the NYC Compost Project Master Composter Certificate Course page for additional course details and the online application.
Community Garden Compost Certificate Program
The Community Garden Compost Certificate is awarded to Bronx Green-Up
gardens that demonstrate a commitment to creating and maintaining their own composting system. To become certified, a garden must demonstrate leadership, team-building, and troubleshooting skills among its own gardeners and with others to make and harvest compost at their site. This certificate program is tailored for each participating Bronx community garden. To enroll your community garden in this program, please contact The NYC Compost Project in the Bronx.
