Due to the invasive Asian longhorned beetle, residents of Brooklyn and Queens must arrange a pick-up time
when discarding any and all tree prunings, firewood, and other organic woody debris. This service is NOT for Christmas tree disposal.
Sections of Brooklyn and Queens fall within a Federal and New York State quarantine zone for the Asian longhorned beetle. As a result, the NYC Department of Sanitation cannot collect firewood and wood from trees growing on residential properties in Brooklyn and Queens. Instead, the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation will provide free on-site wood chipping and disposal of this material for residents in these boroughs.
For more info on this program, go to the wood debris removal
page on the Parks & Recreation
website.
Note: On May 14, 2013, the U.S. Department of Agriculture declared Manhattan and Staten Island free from the invasive Asian longhorned beetle; see press release.
Landscapers are responsible for disposing of wood from trees within Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) quarantine zones at designated disposal locations. To find out more about the landscaper rules and regulations for disposing of wood from ALB quarantine zones, contact the New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets at 631-288-1751.
