Shopping Tips > Grocery Store

Beverages

Consumers have a range of choices when shopping for beverages. Consider the following the next time you shop.

coffee and tea
juice and other beverages
water

Coffee and tea

If you purchase coffee in metal cans, remember to recycle the can when you’re done with the coffee.

Eliminate the need for coffee filters by using a French press, stovetop models, or vacuum pots to make coffee. For coffee makers that require a filter, purchase a reusable filter to fit your coffee pot, and eliminate disposable filters.

Purchase loose tea to avoid using tea bags and the individual wrappers often associated with tea bags.

Remember that tea, tea bags, and coffee grounds can be added to your compost bin.

Juice and other beverages

Concentrates are not always the most convenient but they are the least wasteful and offer the best value. Some manufacturers offer concentrate in a recyclable aluminum can, also a good choice.

When purchasing bottled juice, select the largest size feasible. A 64-oz. plastic or glass jug offers a good value.

Remember to recycle bottles, jugs, beverage cartons, and drink boxes.

Water

New York City water is safe and healthy, but if you are concerned about the tap water in your home, consider purchasing a water filter instead of bottled water. You can permanently install a filter in your sink, or, for less than $20, purchase a reusable pitcher with a water filter. The filter is guaranteed to clean 40 gallons of water, for about 2 months of use. New filters can be purchased for less than $8 each.

If you do purchase water, get the largest size possible. Water packaged in larger containers is less expensive.

Use a refillable container to take water with you, rather than purchasing and disposing of multiple bottles.

Plastic jugs and water bottles are recyclable in New York City. Learn what to recycle.
