NYC TV, the official network of the City of New York and TV Globo, the largest TV broadcaster in Brazil, will be collaborating for the second consecutive year in covering the 20th Annual ‘Brazilian Day in New York’ celebration. Scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 5, the Brazilian Day Festivities will stretch along 6th Ave from 42nd to 56th Street. This annual event has become the largest Brazilian cultural celebration outside of Brazil. Organizers expect to attract about 1 million visitors and the event is watched by over 50 million people worldwide.
Today at City Hall, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg congratulated the organizers and commended TV Globo and NYC TV’s collaboration, which will enable a much wider audience to take in this distinctly New York experience. In announcing the festivity - which commemorates Brazil’s independence from Portugal (1822) - the Mayor was joined by Christiane Torloni, the leading actress of Globo’s hit soap opera, “Mujeres Apasionadas”, which currently airs locally on Telemundo. Torloni will be starring in Globo’s much anticipated production “América”, the first Globo production targeted toward the U.S. Spanish-speaking population.
The joint effort between TV Globo and NYC TV will introduce Brazilian celebrities and musicians - well known throughout much of New York City’s Spanish and Portuguese speaking communities – to a much wider local audience. NYC TV will air highlights of the musical performances and festivities on its flagship channel 74 on its Sunday morning program, Paradetown, USA on September 19th at 10am.
"Last year the co-production was an outstanding success,” said Arick Wierson, General Manager of NYC TV. “Brazilian Day in New York is a smart partnership – the kind that that ensures NYC TV’s place as the number one destination for New York City entertainment, information, arts and culture. We are passionate about what we do, and we’re always looking for innovative ways to highlight our City’s rich cultural diversity.”
"We are very pleased to be working with the City of New York in this effort," said Amauri Soares, the CEO of TV Globo International. "And this is only the beginning; Brazilian Day kicks off a month chock full of important Brazilian cultural events in New York City.”
In addition to the on stage performances, NYC TV will take New Yorkers back stage, as well as documenting all the action on the street during the city's much anticipated cultural celebration. NYC TV personality Julie Laipply will be interviewing the many celebrities and dignitaries on hand. "Last year’s celebration was a definite success for NYC TV," said Seth Unger, who will again be overseeing the production for NYC TV. “This year will be even better.”
Viewers across the world will be able to watch NYC TV’s coverage online as the network streams all of its content as it airs on its website: www.nyc.gov/tv
