Victims of Domestic Violence

Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)

The New York City Housing Authority has a longstanding commitment to assist those who are victims of domestic violence. In 2006 Congress passed the Violence Against Women Act of 2005 (VAWA). This new law protects the rights of public housing applicants, residents and household members who are victims of domestic violence, dating violence, or stalking from being evicted or denied housing assistance based on acts of violence committed against them. VAWA makes certain changes to the public housing program and requires changes to your lease. The changes are outlined in the letter to public housing residents, the VAWA overview and Lease Addendum (see below).
