Federal law requires all public housing residents who are not exempt to perform Community Service or Economic Self-Sufficiency activities for eight (8) hours each month as a condition of tenancy. This site provides information and forms needed to understand and document this service. It also has forms to file for exemptions. At your Annual Review, staff will verify each family member's compliance with the Community Service requirement.
NYCHA is engaging with residents and resident leaders to assist residents in performing the required service:
- Increasing the opportunities available through resident association driven activities;
- Providing additional information to residents using letters, posters (in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Russian), and Journal articles as well as the NYCHA website (including NYCHA activities that can be used to for Community Service and links to other websites with activities that can be found); and
- Making it easier to document service by working with resident associations to provide receipts for Community Service hours at suitable events/activities.
