NYCHA has several major capital projects that will dramatically transform
public housing. These major projects bring comprehensive renovations to
Community Centers, as well as apartment interiors and building exteriors. More
importantly, these projects include a complete overhaul of all building systems,
extending the lifespan of NYCHA developments and Community Centers to serve
residents and members of the public for future generations.

Betances Community Center is located on the first floor of a residential building. The renovated center has been reconfigured from two centers into a single facility, and has dining facilities, kitchen, classroom spaces, a boxing gym with a new glazed entrance, and a new elevator for access to lower level spaces. This $10.6 million center is 16,000 square feet.

Edenwald Houses: In late 2008, Edenwald, NYCHA's largest development in the Bronx, is scheduled to begin major bathroom replacement and modernization for 1,937 bathrooms, along with electrical panel, riser, and wiring upgrades. The apartments will also receive new smoke detectors, and carbon monoxide detectors. Asbestos abatement of the bathroom ceilings and pipe chase insulation will occur during the first phase of the work. Steam distribution and condensate piping will be replaced to allow for more efficient delivery and use of energy. The work represents an estimated $43.6 million investment by NYCHA and will be performed as part of the CM/Build program.

Bay View Community Center Rendering

Bay View Community Center is a two story building that will feature various amenities including a gymnasium/multipurpose room with a stage, a lobby with a sky light, a stair circulation system, classrooms, locker rooms and a kitchen. The building exterior is clad in stone and brick, and the surrounding site consists of an amphitheater and landscaped seating areas.

Ingersoll Community Center

Ingersoll Community Center has been rebuilt as a new two-story structure on the existing foundation of the former one-story center. The building was enlarged to accommodate a full-size gymnasium, an arts and crafts room, kitchen and dining room, computer lab, library and game room in the new 18,000 square foot structure.

Architect's Model of Marcus Garvey Community Center

Marcus Garvey Community Center has been newly constructed encompassing 5,500 square feet to accommodate a multi-purpose room, game room, clubrooms, office, kitchen and outdoor club space surrounded by glass curtain walls.

Saratoga Square Community Center

Saratoga Square Community Center consists of a new addition as well as the renovation of the existing facility to include a multi-purpose room, office spaces, a kitchen, and storage rooms. The new 4,890 square foot center is more than three times the size of the original 1,350 square foot building.

Whitman/Ingersoll Houses: Built in 1944 as temporary housing for workers at the nearby Brooklyn Navy Yard, the Walt Whitman and Raymond V. Ingersoll Houses in Ft. Greene are under major renovations to bring apartments to current standards and to ensure that units are in optimum condition for future generations. NYCHA is investing millions of dollars in comprehensive improvements including bringing elevator service to every floor, enlarging apartments, creating separate and/or upgraded kitchen areas in every apartment, and upgrading the heating and electrical systems in all buildings.

Johnson Community Center entails the renovation of existing spaces and new construction to expand both a Children's Center and a Community Center. The Community Center incorporates a meeting room, an arts room, a gymnasium, a kitchen, and administrative offices. The two-story Children's Center consists of classrooms, administration offices, a kitchen, and utility spaces. Square footage for the Community Center is 14,081 and 9,625 for the Children's Center.

Johnson Houses: Constructed in the late 1940's, James Weldon Johnson Houses, located on the Upper East Side, consists of 10 residential buildings with 1,310 apartments and associated public spaces. Johnson Houses is currently undergoing major exterior and interior renovations. The work includes asbestos abatement; roof replacement; parapet replacement; brick repairs; spandrel beam repairs/replacement; structural repairs at foundation walls; façade cleaning; interior structural repairs comprised of thru slabs and beam repairs in identified apartments; lead abatement in apartments at bathroom and door bucks where structural repairs are performed; kitchen and bathroom renovations; general electrical upgrade of apartments having structural repairs; and structural concrete and cosmetic repair work in public hall areas.

Polo Grounds Community Center, is a newly constructed building situated between Polo Grounds Towers and Rangel Houses. The new facility incorporates a gymnasium, arts and crafts room, photography and darkroom, game room, administration offices, and a multi-purpose room in 21,000 square feet.

Wagner Houses: Constructed in the late 1950's, Senator Robert F. Wagner, Sr. Houses, consists of 22 residential buildings with 2,162 apartments. Wagner Houses has an ongoing capital project for brick and roof repairs for all 22 buildings. This project is part of the CM/Build program. The scope of work includes roof replacement; asbestos abatement; various masonry repairs; partial parapet wall replacement at various buildings; and brick repairs at the bulkheads of various buildings.

Ocean Bay Apartments

Ocean Bay Apartments
(bayside and oceanside): NYCHA is revitalizing Ocean Bay Apartments in Far Rockaway, Queens. Twenty-four of the 31 buildings that make up Ocean Bay Apartments are on the bay side of Rockaway Beach Boulevard, and seven are on the ocean side of the Boulevard. Phases 1 and 2 of the multi-phase renovation work was completed in December 2003, and October 2007 respectively. Some of the renovations included the modernization of more than 1,800 apartments in all 31 buildings and masonry repairs.
Additional work planned for the ocean side of the development will include new intercoms, new roofs for all seven buildings and a complete grounds renovation. On the bay side of the development, additional work will include more apartment renovations, new roofs for the four high-rise buildings, and a grounds renovation. The remaining work is all part of the CM/Build program.

Stapleton Community Center roof

Stapleton Community Center, a major new structure, consists of a 21,000 square foot facility encompassing a large gymnasium. Stapleton also includes a game room, dance room, accessories room, arts and crafts room, weight room, recording studio, offices, locker rooms, kitchen and dining room.

Terrace Community Center

Richmond Terrace Community Center has been enlarged by 4,000 square feet featuring a curved curtain wall with windows open to a spectacular view of the surrounding green hill. The original 4,200 square foot center doubled in size and encompasses a dining room, exercise room, arts and crafts room, lounge, computer lab, classroom, multi-purpose room, and storage rooms.
