All 1,487 apartments at Jefferson Houses in East Harlem will be getting new plastic laminated doors under a $1.7 million contract recently awarded by the Board of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA).
The contract calls for replacing 2,994 existing swing closet doors and 4,691 existing bifold closet doors of various sizes with 7,685 new swing plastic laminated closet doors of various sizes, along with related work.
“The bifold doors used decades ago too often wasted apartment space when left open,” NYCHA Chairman Tino Hernandez explained, adding that these new doors will create an entirely modern look for these apartments.
The contract was awarded to Pillar Contracting Ltd. and is expected to take one year to complete once work has started.
Jefferson Houses, completed in June 1959, consists of 18 buildings in an area bounded by E. 112th and E. 115th Streets, between First and Third Avenues.
