NAMED AFTER: DANIEL WEBSTER (1782-1852) – A U.S. Representative from New Hampshire and later a Representative and Senator from Massachusetts, he was a noted orator who espoused the preservation of the Union as a leader in the new Whig Party. Webster fast became a champion of American nationalism. He was a strong opponent of the war of 1812 because it had crippled New England's shipping industry. When New England switched to manufacturing to replace the lost shipping business, Webster fought for high-tariffs to prevent competition from imports. He twice served as Secretary of State (1841-43 and 1850-52). Webster Houses is in the Bronx.
