NAMED AFTER: WILLIAM REID (1890 – 1969) – The 7th Chairman of the New York City Housing Authority, Reid served for more than seven years before retiring at age 75 on December 31,1965. Reid began public service in 1913 in the Comptroller's office. From there he moved into the Treasurer's office and rose to the head of the City's tax office. All told, he was involved with city finances for some 32 years. He became a deputy mayor under Mayor William O'Dwyer and in 1958 as Chairman of NYCHA, Reid was pushed by then Mayor Robert Wagner to accelerate the building of public housing to replace badly deteriorating slums. At the time the city was getting enough federal aid to build 6,000 new apartments a year. Reid instituted a resident participation program to report people who were guilty of "throwing garbage on the floor or damaging the place in any way." SITE STATISTICS AND DESCRIPTION:
William Reid Apartments in Brooklyn is a 20-story building exclusively for seniors. There are 228 apartments housing an estimated 230 residents. Completed November 30, 1969, the 1.58-acre complex is bordered by Maple Street, Troy, Albany and East New York Avenues.
