from the development management office

- If I do not have a high school diploma will I be able to participate in the RES program?
Yes. Not all available jobs require a high school diploma or GED certificate. There are occupational opportunities in the
construction trades, security field, and food and hospitality services that do not have this educational requirement. However,
should you wish to acquire a GED, we can refer you to a provider that offers cost-free GED preparation and testing.

- What if the employer expects that I have prior work experience, and/or have had some special training
but I dropped out and/or have never had a real or full-time job, and/or have never received any job training?
If you lack certain skills required for a particular job, we will offer you training. If you’ve never held a job, we will
afford you the opportunity to volunteer to work at a location that will acquaint you with the work environment and help you gain
some work experience.

- Would I be able to get a job if I’ve been arrested and/or have been convicted of an
offense?
It is unlawful to deny a person a job by reason of a criminal conviction; it violates employment discrimination laws. However,
certain convictions may disqualify someone from obtaining employment in certain areas. For example, a sexual offender may be
disqualified from working with children. An embezzler may properly be denied a job as a bank teller. The employer must show a
clear connection between the offense and the job qualifications required to successfully perform the job.
Please be aware, you should never misrepresent your criminal record. An individual who fails to truthfully disclose a
criminal record will be disqualified for employment and, if hired, terminated. Please also note that an arrest is not a
conviction. Anyone can be arrested. You are presumed innocent until a verdict is entered against you. What counts is a
conviction.

- Will I be considered for a position if I have some kind of disability, like a hearing impairment,
limited ability to walk, or some other physical or mental disability?
It is unlawful to discriminate in employment on the basis of disability. However, there are bona fide occupational
qualifications that require an individual to have certain physical or mental abilities. Your disability may not be of such a
nature that you cannot perform the job. For example, a visually impaired individual cannot expect to be hired to drive a bus, but
may be qualified for other duties that do not require the ability of sight.

- What is the duration of a job training program?
A job training program may last as short as eight (8) hours or as long as one (1) year. This will depend on the type of
training you take.
- What types of jobs are available after completion of a training program?
It depends on the nature of the job training program. Some training programs offer post-training employment assistance.
Typically, once you successfully complete the job training program, the administrators will assist you in scheduling employer
interviews with businesses or individuals looking to hire new trainees. In some instances the Job Development team at RES will
refer you to employers seeking qualified workers. However, RES cannot guarantee you post-training employment. RES can assist
with job referrals but it is up to you to follow-up with an interview.
- How long will I be working if I successfully receive a job referral?
It depends on whether the employer is seeking full-time permanent, full-time temporary or part-time temporary employees. RES
Job Developers will inform you about the term or period of employment an employer is looking to hire and retain an employee. You
must decide whether the terms and conditions of employment suit your needs.

- How long will it take for me to get a job from the time that I apply to RES?
It depends on your skills, occupation demand, and employers’ needs. However, we will expect that you be prepared, ready and
available to immediately respond to any job referrals that we make on your behalf.

- If I receive a job, but am terminated for whatever reason, may I continue to receive services from
RES?
If your termination is due to circumstances associated with the employer’s economic situation, for example, RES will continue
to work with you to obtain additional job referrals or training. However, if you were terminated for cause, that is, you were
engaged in unlawful activity or violated the terms and conditions of your employment, for example, RES will not continue to offer
you services.

- Can RES help me find a job at NYCHA?

submission to NYCHA, as well as, inform you about any upcoming Civil Service examinations that may qualify you to apply for
certain civil service title positions within NYCHA. RES may also provide information about job fairs or other employment
opportunities offered by NYCHA, other government agencies, and/or private employers.
