Resident Employment Services

Intake- Information session (Orientation):

You will be greeted by our staff and attend an information session where our staff will provide you with an overview of all our services which include referrals for employment, training, GED and ESL classes, apprenticeships, resume workshops, etc.  You will be assigned a specialist who will assist you in achieving your goal.

Prior to your appointment you can download and print the Customer Information Form and have it validated by your Management Office. Please bring the validated application with you to your Orientation Session.

Career Counseling, Job Development:

  • Our Career Specialists will help you develop a career plan and attain necessary skills to help you reach your goal. They can refer you for training and educational opportunities.
  • Our Job Developers will help you find employment that matches your skillset.

Training and Education
Our Career Specialists can help you with:

  • Developing a career plan
  • Referrals for vocational training
  • Referrals for English as a Second Language (ESL) classes
  • Referrals to General Equivalency Diploma (GED) classes
  • Referrals for both men and women for apprenticeships in construction trades

NYCHA Resident Training Academy (NRTA) NEW

The NYCHA Resident Training Academy (NRTA) provides construction and janitorial related training programs and job placement assistance to NYCHA residents.  Trainees who successfully complete their training program are assisted in getting employment at NYCHA as Caretakers and with NYCHA contractors in construction related positions.  The Resident Training Academy is a collaboration amongst the New York City Housing Authority, Robin Hood, Brooklyn Workforce Innovations (BWI), Non-Traditional Employment for Women (NEW) and Building Works.

Minimum Requirements for Caretaker (Janitorial) Training

  • A NYCHA resident on the lease
  • 18 years of age or older
  • 6th grade reading and math proficiency
  • Able to pass a drug test
  • Be able to perform 8 hours of physical work each day

Minimum Requirements for Construction Training

  • A NYCHA resident on the lease
  • 18 years of age or older
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 8th grade reading and math proficiency
  • Able to pass a drug test
  • Able to lift 50 lbs or more
  • Be able to perform 8 hours of physical work each day

Construction and Apprenticeship Opportunities
We have special programs for you if you are interested in a career in the construction trades. Below is a list of current construction, pre-apprenticeship, and apprenticeship training programs for eligible NYCHA residents.

Section 3/Resident Employment Program (REP)
Section 3 and Resident Employment Program (REP) are two programs that create opportunities for NYCHA residents to work in the construction trades.  These are temporary work assignments at our Developments.

Computer Resource Room
Our Computer Resource Room is available for you to work independently or with assistance to create resumes, perform your job search and complete online employment applications.

Workforce 1
Resident Employment Services works closely with Workforce 1 Career Centers located in all five boroughs. They offer comprehensive assessments, referrals, and job placements. In Workforce 1's Career Resource Room, you will have access to computers and the internet. Additionally, Workforce 1 can help you prepare and distribute your resume; give you access to fax and photocopying machines; help you improve your typing skills; and tell you about employment opportunities.
