What to Expect When You Come to RES
Intake- Information session (Orientation):

You will be greeted by our staff and attend an information session where our staff will provide you with an overview of all our services which include referrals for employment, training, GED and ESL classes, apprenticeships, resume workshops, etc.  You will be assigned a specialist who will assist you in achieving your goal.

Prior to your appointment you can download and print the Customer Information Form and have it validated by your Management Office. Please bring the validated application with you to your Orientation Session.

Career Counseling, Job Development:

  • Our Career Specialists will help you develop a career plan and attain necessary skills to help you reach your goal. They can refer you for training and educational opportunities.
  • Our Job Developers will help you find employment that matches your skillset.

  • Employment in construction as part of the economic stimulus plan.

Training and Education
Our Career Specialists can help you with:

  • Developing a career plan
  • Referrals for vocational training
  • Referrals for English as a Second Language (ESL) classes
  • Referrals to General Equivalency Diploma (GED) classes
  • Referrals for both men and women for apprenticeships in construction trades

We work in partnership with other agencies and training grants which can provide you with excellent training opportunities. Some of the training programs currently available are:

Section 3/Resident Employment Program (REP)
Section 3 and Resident Employment Program (REP) are two programs that create opportunities for NYCHA residents to work in the construction trades.  These are temporary work assignments at our Developments.

Computer Resource Room
Our Computer Resource Room is available for you to work independently or with assistance to create resumes, perform your job search and complete online employment applications.
You will have access to:

  • a phone to use in your employment and training search

Workforce 1
Resident Employment Services works closely with Workforce 1 Career Centers located in all five boroughs. They offer comprehensive assessments, referrals, and job placements. In Workforce 1's Career Resource Room, you will have access to computers and the internet. Additionally, Workforce 1 can help you prepare and distribute your resume; give you access to fax and photocopying machines; help you improve your typing skills; and tell you about employment opportunities. RES Accomplishments
RES serves hundreds of NYCHA residents every month. RES’s assessments and referrals translate to real jobs for hundreds of residents each year.

See the statistics below to see RES’s recent progress. Statistics refer to 2008 accomplishments:

  • 1,822 residents were served from 228 different developments Citywide
  • RES staff made 1,721 referrals to various training, educational and vocational programs
  • Placed 107 residents in apprenticeship programs
  • 305 Jobs were filled by resident’s city wide
  • The average Placement wage citywide was $16.54
  • 10 hires were reported under Section 3
  • 31 hires were reported under REP

Million Trees NYC Training Program Information

Want a meaningful career in the environmental field?
Earn $10.24 per hour as you gain knowledge and experience.

The MillionTrees Training Program work towards more environmentally healthy living for the future through a 7-month green-collar job course of training designed to educate you to become more aware and proactive towards the wellness of the environment while gaining employment and life skills.

The MillionTrees Training Program provides intensive training in three specific fields: Arboriculture, Ecological Restoration, and Garden Restoration and Design.

Arboriculture Track:

  • You will be working with the Forestry Divisions of NYC Parks, Central Park Conservancy and the Prospect Park Alliance to prune, climb and care for trees.
  • You will learn tree stewardship, pruning and planting techniques, as well as tree identification and inspection skills.

Ecological Restoration Track:

  • You will be working with the Natural Resources Group, NYC Parks, Central Park Conservancy and the Prospect Park Alliance in the protection, restoration and management of the natural areas of NYC.
  • Projects include: erosion control, manual and chemical aquatic and terrestrial invasive plant removal, and green roof installation.
  • This track also supports community-led or sponsored restoration, greening and cleanup projects.

MTTP Garden Restoration/Landscape Design Track:

  • You will assists in executing MillionTreesNYC community planting strategies through site surveying, tree and materials procurement, site preparation, planting, outreach and stewardship activities.
  • This track also develops and executes landscape design and planting standards - Visions of Horticulture - for the New York Restorations Project's 57 community gardens.

Trainings and Certifications consist of:

  • 108- Hour Continuing education credits from New York Botanical Garden (NYBG)
  • Trees New York Citizen Pruner and Climber/Pruner Certificates
  • Pesticide/Herbicide Application Apprentice NYC DEC
  • Master Compost Training Certificate LES Ecology Center

Throughout the 7 months of green job training, trainees are also trained: Time Management, Financial Planning, and Customer Service/Conflict Resolution training.

The MillionTrees Training Program also offers Driver's License Education for a Drivers license and/or Commercial Drivers License.
