NYCHA Resident Training Academy (NRTA)

The NYCHA Resident Training Academy (NRTA) provides employment-focused training and job placement assistance to NYCHA residents in the construction, janitorial and pest control fields. The NRTA works with successful graduates of the Academy to provide placement assistant into jobs with career paths at NYCHA as Caretakers and Pest Control Technicians, and with NYCHA contractors in construction-related positions.

Minimum Requirements for Caretaker (Janitorial) Training
  • A NYCHA resident on the lease
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Able to score a 6.0 reading and math level on the Test of Adult Basic Education (T.A.B.E.)
  • Able to pass a drug test
  • Be able to perform eight (8) hours of physical work each day

Minimum Requirements for Construction Training

  • A NYCHA resident on the lease
  • 18 years of age or older
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Able to score a 7.0  reading and math  level on the T.A.B.E.
  • Able to pass a drug test
  • Able to lift 50 lbs or more
  • Be able to perform eight (8) hours of physical work each day

Minimum Requirements for Pest Control Training

  • A NYCHA resident on the lease
  • 21 years of age or older
  • New York State Photo ID, issued by the DMV. A driver’s license is not required
  • Able to score a 10.0reading and 9.0 math level on the T.A.B.E.
  • Able to pass a drug test & a criminal background check
  • Able to be on your feet for eight (8) hours each day
  • Willing and able to be fit for a respirator mask (must be clean shaven)
  • Willingness to be around and discard, living and dead, rodents and insects
  • Willingness to work with hazardous chemicals
  • Able to wear protective gear including arm length chemical resistant gloves, boots and aprons and safety goggles
