NYCHA Youth Learn About Careers in Fashion from Esteemed Panel
On Feb. 1, 75 NYCHA youth learned the ins and outs of the fashion world from an esteemed panel of industry experts as part of events in advance of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at the High School for Fashion Industries. The panel discussion - under the sponsorship of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and IMG Fashion - included panelists such as fashion designer, Betsey Johnson and Malcolm Carfrae, Calvin Klien Executive VP of Global Communications. These experts spoke about fashion beyond the runway, with emphasis on careers like stylist, fashion writer/blogger, producer, and director.

NYCHA Seniors Ring in the Year of the Dragon
NYCHA seniors at Manhattan's Meltzer Towers Senior Center gathered to celebrate Chinese New Year. Known as the "Year of the Dragon" in 2012, the holiday is the longest and most important of Chinese holidays. The dragon is regarded as one of the most important astrological signs symbolizing power, strength, and good luck.

Prospect Plaza Plans Push Forward
Former Prospect Plaza residents and NYCHA officials met at Brooklyn’s Van Dyke Community Center on Jan. 11 for to discuss progress in the redevelopment plan. With construction of the development set to begin in late 2013, former residents received an update on the efforts. The mixed-use development will boast a minimum of 80 public housing units and approximately 280 affordable housing units along with ground-floor retail, community facility space, and open space.

Workshop Sessions Put NYCHA Residents on the Road to Homeownership
New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) residents attended a homeownership workshop in Brooklyn hosted by Habitat for Humanity in partnership with NYCHA to learn about the construction of over 100 condominiums in the Bedford-Stuyvesant and Brownsville neighborhoods and qualifications for purchasing. The Dec. 14 workshop was the first of several information sessions the non-profit is conducting specifically for NYCHA residents. Selected candidates will get education throughout the home-buying process as well as a home maintenance class.

NYCHA Youth Celebrate Goodwill at Holiday Toy Drive
Nearly 500 children representing New York City Housing Authority developments from all five boroughs gathered at Manhattanville Community Center to celebrate the holidays at NYCHA’s 21st Annual Holiday Toy/Food Drive on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011. NYCHA youth celebrated and received donated toys, while over 1,100 pounds of canned food was collected in the weeks prior to the celebration to benefit needy families thanks to NYCHA Community Centers citywide.

Jan. 12 Open House: Markham Gardens Offers Homeownership Opportunities for NYCHA Residents & Employees
NYCHA's redeveloped Markham Gardens in Staten Island, is offering new townhomes to income-eligible public housing residents. There are 9 brand new, energy efficient, two-family houses in the mixed-income community now available for purchase by NYCHA residents and employees with a good credit history and income as low as $50,700. NYCHA residents and employees are welcome to attend an open house on Jan. 12, 2012.

New Community Center Opens in Johnson Houses

NYCHA Chairman John B. Rhea celebrated the opening of the James Weldon Johnson Community & Children's Center with Johnson Houses residents, elected officials, and other local leaders on Dec. 2 at the East Harlem development. Residents can now enjoy recreational opportunities and technology in a safe environment after years of thoughtful planning by NYCHA. The Center includes a performance stage, weight room, senior area, kitchen, and a technology center sponsored by Time Warner Cable. Additional partners include the Children's Museum of Manhattan - who will create a permanent interactive exhibit and hands-on educational programs - and the Supportive Children's Advocacy Network, who will provide after-school programs as well as GED prep and job training.

NYCHA, Local 79 Celebrate the Addition of Over 200 Public Housing Residents to the Union
Officials from NYCHA and Laborers’ Local 79 of the Mason Tenders District Council (MTDC) of Greater New York joined at Harlem's Johnson Houses to celebrate the addition of more than 200 NYCHA residents into the union. The addition of the workers is part of NYCHA's Section 3 efforts to link public housing residents with employment opportunities.

NYCHA Helps Teens See Signs of Domestic Abuse at Annual Conference
Keeping with NYCHA's longstanding commitment to assist those who are victims of domestic violence, the Social Services Department held the 10th Annual Domestic Violence Awareness Conference on Saturday, Oct. 29. This year's theme, "We Stand for Healthy Teen Dating Relationships,” focused on promoting positive models for NYCHA youth. MSNBC anchor Tamron Hall delivered remarks at the conference held at York College in Jamaica, Queens, which also featured interactive workshops and informational tables on how to seek out the appropriate assistance when dealing with domestic violence.

Children's Museum Exhibit to Make East Harlem Development its New Home
NYCHA, in partnership with the Children's Museum of Manhattan, will host a 2,000-square-foot installation in the East Harlem development James Weldon Johnson Houses. Through a federal grant awarded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the permanent exhibition will focus on health and literacy and is set to include 25 interactive stations, as well as regularly updated programming, scheduled to begin in 2012.

Resident Board Member Gonzalez Recognized for Contributions to Manhattan's West Side

New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Board Member, Victor A. Gonzalez, received a 2011 WESTY Award in a ceremony on Oct. 19, 2011 for his efforts to improve Manhattan’s West Side. Mr. Gonzalez, who has lived in the Upper West Side (Wise Towers) since 1972, was appointed by Mayor Bloomberg to the NYCHA Board in July 2011, becoming the first New York City public housing resident to sit on the executive Board. The WESTY—a civic award, which stands for ‘West Side Spirit Thanks You’, is presented by the West Side Spirit through its publisher, Manhattan Media.

New York City has created a new emergency preparedness guide designed for people with special needs – Ready New York: My Emergency Plan. The guide is a large format, interactive workbook that helps citizens learn how to establish a support network, capture important health information, create an evacuation plan, and gather emergency supplies. The guide recognizes that everyone’s needs in an emergency are unique and no one should plan for an emergency alone.

Reading Event Engages Harlem Youth & Families
Over 100 youth gathered at the St. Nicholas Houses Senior Center to participate in the first “Literacy Day” hosted by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), in partnership with the Harlem Children’s Zone. The event focused on promoting literacy and encouraging families at the Harlem development to get involved in community-based events to achieve education goals. "Literacy Day" is just one of NYCHA’s education programs geared toward helping youth, teens and adults acquire skills in a fun and engaging environment.

NYCHA’s Best and Brightest CUNY Students Earn
$1,000 Scholarships to Further Their Studies
This year, NYCHA once again proved its commitment to supporting residents in their educational pursuits by awarding scholarships through the NYCHA-CUNY Resident Scholarship Program. NYCHA also introduced the Regina A. Figueroa Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded to residents with disabilities who are enrolled in a CUNY undergraduate program. Scholarship recipients range in age from 20 years old to 50. All scholars are full-time undergraduates at a college of The City University of New York (CUNY), and maintain a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher.

NYCHA Youth Get on the Sideline with Help from the NFL
Now in its second year, the NYCHA - NFL Officiating Academy has taught another group of youth the ins and outs of overseeing one of the country's most popular sports. NYCHA's partnership with the National Football League offers an innovative football officiating training program geared towards providing NYCHA residents ages 17-24 with the skills necessary to become a game official. Aside from learning the finer points of officiating with the potential of pursuing a career in the field, the program also teaches valuable life skills.

A large group of promising NYCHA youth attended the inaugural NYCHA Young Adult Engagement Session on Aug. 19 to share their thoughts about NYCHA’s job training programs and the Green City Force, a nonprofit that prepares young people for careers in the emerging green economy.

Resident Training Academy Graduates Get Down to Business
The hard work of some of NYCHA's Resident Training Academy (NRTA) graduates has led to employment opportunities in the fields where they acquired their new skills. The NRTA provides construction and janitorial related training programs and job placement assistance to NYCHA residents. Trainees who successfully complete their training program are assisted in getting employment at NYCHA as Caretakers and with NYCHA contractors in construction related positions.

NYCHA Good Samaritan Helps Save Boy
NYCHA Caretaker and resident Sabrina Johnson can also add “hero” to her list of accomplishments after aiding in the rescue of a 10-year-old boy. Johnson - who resides in Harlem development Grant Houses - was among a group of passersby who pulled the boy to safety after he was struck by a car and pinned underneath a second vehicle on Wednesday evening. The good Samaritans first had to lift the vehicle that the boy was trapped under before pulling him out of harm’s way. The boy was taken to Harlem Hospital in stable condition.

Victor Gonzalez, Resident Board Member

First Resident Board Member Is Appointed to NYCHA Board
Victor Antonio Gonzalez has been appointed to the New York City Housing Authority Board as NYCHA's first Resident Board Member. Mr. Gonzalez is a long time resident of Wise Towers and actively serves as President of the Wise Towers Resident Association and on the board of community organizations. Mr. Gonzalez will serve alongside Chairman Rhea, Vice Chair Emily Youssouf, and Board Member Margarita López.
