Selected by a committee appointed by Kenneth
T. Jackson, Chairman of New York City 100 Historians Committee,
the Centennial Historians represent a distinguished group who advised
on New York City 100: Greater New York Centennial Celebration history
programming in 1998. They represent all five boroughs as well as
the larger community of scholars around the country. All are in
writing, media production, teaching, preservation and promotion
of the city's history. They all believe in the importance of the
past and in understanding the present circumstances and future prospects
of the great metropolis.
The list of
Centennial Historians is not meant to imply that there are not other
people doing important work in the field. This group will serve
as the base for the creation of a larger network, the Alliance for
New York City History. The Alliance for New York City History, we
hope, will serve as a unified voice for members of the historical
community doing work on aspects of the city's history.
