Lower Manhattan was chosen as a pilot area to test public messaging. This district will allow the City to test messaging especially for events related to construction, deconstruction, and decontamination that are part of the rebuilding efforts following the September 11th attacks. Buildings in this area include 130 Cedar Street, 130 Liberty Street, Fiterman Hall (50 West Broadway), and the World Trade Center site.
This pilot area is generally known as Lower Manhattan, which runs south of Canal Street from the Hudson River to Baxter Street. The area closely parallels the boundaries of Manhattan's Community District 1, and includes the neighborhoods of Battery Park City, the Financial District, Tribeca, and the Civic Center.
During the pilot, messages will be sent to participants about significant events impacting the Lower Manhattan area. A significant event is any emergency with potential to compromise public health or safety. For example, hazardous material releases, major building fires, and coastal storms will trigger Notify NYC messaging.
Participants in this program will have the option to receive emergency information via email and/or text messages to mobile devices.
Please note the City intends to send monthly test messages during the pilot. These messages will be identified as tests and sent between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. once a month.
