Management of any nonprofit organization is a multifacted endeavor with responsibilities ranging from fundraising to ensuring long-term sustainability to compliance with local and national laws. I. Management Sustainability and Capacity Building

The recent economic downturn highlighted, among many things, the need for sustainable and sound management practices at nonprofits. The following resources organized by the Nationl Council of Nonprofits and the Mayor's Office of Contract Services focus on the core components of developing a sound business model from sustainability exercises to strategic business planning and financial management.

II. Fundraising

 For organizations either launching a fundraising program or those with seasoned development professionals, the Foundation Center is an extremely valuable resource that offers webinars, in person trainings as well as a vast library for organizations interested in researching potential funding opportunities.

III. Board Roles and Responsibilities

A strong board of directors provides a vision for the executive director and staff of a nonprofit organization, engages stakeholders to support that vision and exercises key oversight responsibilities, including fiscal oversight as fiduciaries of the organization. To fulfill all three roles successfully, an effective board requires a diversity of skills and an appropriate structure. With the passage of the Nonprofit Revitalization Act set to go into effect on July 1, 2014, nonprofits need to get up to speed on the latest regulations.
