Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages Created as a way to use QCEW to gather employment info on NP sector. Data is regularly collected by state workforce agencies as part of the Federal-State cooperative statistical system. QCEW aggregates info by county and allows comparison with other sectors. QCES is published quarterly within 6-7 months of collection
Charity Navigator Evaluates and rates the financial health of over 5,300 of the country’s largest charities.  Website includes many up-to-date articles on issues related to the sector as well as studies and annual surveys compiled with national-level data on nonprofits. Varies – updated frequently
Chronicle of Philanthropy Provides current information mainly in the form of articles, on happenings in the nonprofit sector as a whole.  While it is a national publication, there are many NYC specific articles.  All information is available online. Published biweekly
Federal Reserve Bank of NY Economists analyze local economic growth, labor markets, real estate, and public finance issues, contributing to discussions of regional and national economic policy and providing “Regional Indexes of Coincident Economic Indicators.”  Index of coincident Economic Factors updated monthly, with at least a two month lag.
Federal Reserve Bank of NY Provides information and technical assistance to financial institutions, non-profit organizations and others on issues related to community development, economic development and access to credit and capital in low- and moderate-income communities.   
Fund for the City of New York Website includes several studies on the nonprofit sector in New York City. Timing of updates varies
Guidestar A database of information on 1.7 million nonprofit organizations.  This data includes details on nonprofit compensation, and easy-to-read charts and graphs reveal trends in income, assets, and expenses.Additionally Gov@guidestar offers a suite of tools designed specifically for government users of GuideStar data.  Varies

John Hopkins University, Center for Civil Society Studies Seeks to improve understanding and the effective functioning of not-for-profit, philanthropic, or “civil society” organizations in the United States and throughout the world in order to enhance the contribution these organizations can make to democracy and the quality of human life. The Center is a part of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Policy Studies. NY State Dept of Labor Provides “Quarterly Workforce Indicators,” describing employment, job flows, and earnings across New York State, available by age group and gender; “Industry Focus,” section examines top industries in local areas and the characteristics of workers in those industries; “OntheMap,” creates detailed maps showing where workers are employed and where they live with companion reports on age, earnings, industry distribution, and local workforce indicators. and “Community Economic Development (CED) HotReport,” a compilation of economic data from a variety of sources. The New York City Nonprofits Project Website contains a series of valuable reports and data on the state of nonprofits in New York City.  The project is housed at the CUNY Graduate Center and research has been led by Dr. John Seley, Professor, City University of New York and Dr. Julian Wolpert, Professor, Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University.  Website also has many useful links.
