Since New York City is home to a vibrant and expansive nonprofit sector, there is a unique opportunity to lower costs by leveraging purchasing power.
The City of New York has created a membership opportunity in Essensa, a group purchasing organization, for the nonprofits with which it works. Membership provides access to discounts on a wide range of goods and services from manufacturers and suppliers.
Essentially, the volume of purchases across the sector allows Essensa to negotiate lower prices. Lower prices are passed on to members without requirements for minimum purchases (i.e. providers are not required to buy more than they usually would). Savings may be allocated to service delivery and participating nonprofits will also be able to streamline purchasing by working with a central vendor.
