Technical Assistance - Greater New York

greaterny
The Program:
Launched by private sector business leaders in response to the current economic crisis, Greater New York is a strategic partnership program that pairs business executives with nonprofit executive directors in an effort to build stronger and more effective nonprofits. Through two-year one-on-one partnerships, leaders work together to develop and implement innovative solutions to nonprofit business challenges using best practices from both the private and nonprofit sectors. This public-private partnership is an initiative of the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City. The Mayor's Fund is a 501(c)3 organization designed to aid public programs and address emerging needs through innovative projects such as Greater New York.

Who is Eligible to Apply:
Greater NY seeks to serve nonprofit organizations that provide human and social services, or similarly sized cultural organizations that provide programming for vulnerable residents. Greater NY is targeting nonprofit organizations with annual operative budgets between $2 and $20 million. All eligible nonprofits must currently receive funding from New York City.

Because the corporate executives will have expertise in at lease one of the following areas, a nonprofit executive must be able to articulate a need for assistance that falls within these areas:
  • Administration
  • Expansion/Growth Strategy
  • Financial Management
  • Human Resources Strategy
  • Marketing/Communications/Outreach
  • Real Estate Sales/Acquisitions
  • Strategic Decision Making

Criteria to Consider if Greater NY is right for you and your organization:
Successful partnerships are difficult to achieve under the best of circumstances. Before you apply be sure of the following:
  • Have a need for assistance in one of the areas noted above
  • Have the time to invest in working with your executive partner to develop a mutual understanding of each others needs and skills
  • Have the time to develop mutual goals, outcomes, timetables and deliverables
  • Be able to meet at least monthly with your executive partner for two years

For Those Nonprofits Selected, they will:
  • Receive a grant of $15,000 in two installments of $7,500 in recognition of the value of their time
  • The opportunity to apply to Greater NY for additional funds to implement structural innovations

To Apply
  • The application deadline for this program was December 1, 2009.
  • The selection of participants is based on demonstrated need and a mutual matching of interests of nonprofit and corporate leaders.
