Pickles & Pumps
The Lower East Side (LES) has always been fertile ground for entrepreneurial energy and culture. Once a hub for hardworking immigrants and retailers getting their start, the LES is where it's beginning again for a fresh influx of emerging artists and innovative merchants.
LES is More. Explore.®
The Lower East Side's famous Orchard Street gained its flavor more than 200 years ago as families squeezed into Lower Manhattan's cramped quarters. Industrious immigrants later became the neighborhood's first business owners, selling their wares from potato sacks, pushcarts, and eventually, storefronts. These merchants also laid the foundation for the LES of today. Now, neighborhood staples feature a fusion of cultures including classic retailers and historic sites, distinctive tastes like fermenting pickles, fresh pastrami and rugalech all juxtaposed to the City's hottest fashion, culinary and nightlife scene.
Where Creativity Reigns…
Over the years, the LES' notably diverse businesses and cultural centers have welcomed emerging artists and designers to the mix. Dozens of galleries now pepper the LES, lending an eclectic assortment of exhibitions and creative retail shop displays. Those seeking inspiration crowd into the art exhibitions, poetry readings, and film and video screenings at ABC No Rio (156 Rivington Street), an internationally-known collective for art and activism, while others enjoy the ELS-LES (Every Last Sunday on the Lower East Side) walking tours, which meet the last Sunday of every month to explore local galleries (1:00 P.M. at 261 Broome Street). Retail shops often double as galleries, and merchants are often also artists, creating incredibly unique finds.
